For me personally, preventive dental care from a pedagogical perspective is the key to healthy teeth. You can't start early enough.
In our practice we have several tools for this, namely:
- Gewoon Gaaf -
Individual tooth decay prevention
What is Gewoon Gaaf?
Gewoon Gaaf (Dutch for “simply healthy”) is a prevention method for every individual child aged 0 to 18 and their parents or carers.
The dentist or dental hygienist gives the parent and the child advice that is tailored to the child’s teeth, and guides the child in getting and keeping healthy teeth.
With Gewoon Gaaf, the dentist or dental hygienist makes a risk assessment. How well do the parent and the child look after the child’s teeth? How is their oral hygiene? Are teeth or molars coming through? Is the child losing milk teeth? Does the child have (early) cavities? Based on this risk assessment, the dentist decides when he would like to see the child (and parent) back at the practice. Sometimes he will give the molars extra protection (sealing) or a fluoride treatment, but usually these treatments are not necessary. So how the prevention method is applied can differ within one family.
After all, Gewoon Gaaf looks at every individual.
Recent scientific research in the Netherlands (Dr Erik Vermaire, 2013) shows that the Gewoon Gaaf method can lead to up to 70% fewer cavities.
